The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has passed a shs12 billion budget for 2024, with a strategic focus on strengthening structures, boosting grassroots programs, and improving competitions across the country.

The announcement came during the union's annual general meeting held in Lugogo, where key stakeholders gathered to discuss the future of rugby in Uganda.

While presiding over the assembly, National Council of Sports (NCS) chairman Ambrose Tashobya emphasized the importance of governance and accountability in promoting the sustainable development of rugby in Uganda.

"Improved governance is crucial to ensure accountability and sustained growth in the sport," Tashobya stated.

The approved budget aims to bolster national teams, enhance rugby competitions, and launch capacity-building initiatives.

Godwin Kayangwe, President of the Uganda Rugby Union, outlined the focus areas for the coming year, noting the emphasis on both national and grassroots-level activities.

"Our budget reflects our commitment to national teams and competitions, as well as the development of rugby at the grassroots," Kayangwe said.

With Uganda set to host the 2023 and 2024 Rugby Africa Cup editions, preparations for the continental showpiece have become a top priority.

Kayangwe acknowledged the significance of these events and the need for thorough planning.

"Hosting the Rugby Africa Cup is a major opportunity for Uganda, and we are fully committed to ensuring a successful event," he added.

Rugby is one of Uganda's fastest-growing sports and ranks among the top-funded disciplines by the National Council of Sports.

The union's focus on grassroots development aims to continue building the sport's popularity and accessibility across the country.
